I have learned to shave my costs by buying my herbs and spices from Azure standard or even Costco.  I do this for so many reasons but my main reason is to save money as I work to  challenge every cost in my kitchen.

If I can shave the cost of everything in my kitchen by purchasing in bulk, imagine the money I could save for other projects on my homestead!

Make Your Own Spice Mixes

In the progression of storing up herbs and spices I have begun to make and store my own spice mixes.  I now make my own Italian seasoning, ranch dressing mix, steak seasoning, and everything bagel mix.

When you have pretty much all the spices and herbs in your pantry you can create anything!  Not only does this save money but it also saves time.  I can round up a seasoning mix pretty easy with what I have in stock in about 3 minutes!

This saves a trip to the grocery which in most cases just causes me to spend more money because I make a stop. Another cost saver!

How to get your bulk spices

The best way to get your bulk spices is to grow them. Talk about saving a buck. You can usually buy a packet of seeds for the same price or less than a 0.12 ounce bottle of the herb or spice in the store.

Growing your herbs not only saves you money but you also have fresh herbs in the summer and then you can preserve your herbs for the rest of the year!

I buy most of my herbs in bulk from Azure Standard.  There standards are really high so when I buy from them, I know I am getting the best quality for my money.  You can also buy in bulk from Costco or other warehouse stores.  You can usually buy a large container for about the same price an individual container is in the store.

Another great place to consider is an Ethnic Grocery Store.  You can usually buy bulk packages of herbs and spices at a discounted price there as well.

How to store your bulk herbs and spices

Here is my spice drawer which is located below my range top.  I keep a quart jar of most of my spices and mixes I have made.

As an Amazon associate, I earn an income on qualifying purchases.

If I have purchased too much for my quart jars I will save them in ½ gallon jars or other canning jars for long term storage.  Most of these will keep for about a year.  I used a food saver device when preserving them in a glass jar.

If you feel you are going to need to save them longer you can add an oxygen absorber prior to food saving to keep it fresh and this works great!

You can also preserve or store you spices in a plastic food saver bag as well. I like the glass jar option because I can easily break into the jar if needed and then reseal with my jar sealer to keep it fresh.
